Chiles Valley District · Napa Valley
A family Zinfandel estate in the hills above Chiles Valley, named for its red chert and green serpentine soils, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Jay Heminway, a sculptor who taught at UC Berkeley, bought this hillside property in 1969, when it held a cold-water hunting cabin, a burned-down barn and an abandoned Cadillac. He planted Zinfandel near the remains of century-old vines, and Green & Red's first public vintage, from 1977, was made with a basket press and bottled by hand. Since Jay's death in 2019, his daughter Tobin Heminway has run the estate.
The name comes from the red chert soils and veins of green serpentine that run through the property. There are three vineyards, from the Chiles Mill Vineyard at 800 to 1,000 feet, named for the grist mill Joseph B. Chiles built in 1845, up to Tip Top at 1,800 to 2,000 feet, all in the Chiles Valley District. Ridge, Turley and Biale also make Zinfandel from this fruit, and for over 35 years Green & Red has made a Zinfandel bottled for Chez Panisse.
Visits are by appointment and combine a tasting with a tour of the winery and vineyard, about 90 minutes in all. Parties are small, four guests or fewer, because space is limited. From the deck, the winery says, you can see west into the central Napa Valley and east over Chiles Valley.
$60 for the Tasting and Winery/Vineyard Tour, about 90 minutes. The fee is prepaid as a deposit, and one guest's fee is waived with the purchase of a case of wine.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
