Freedom Estate belongs to Shawn and Connie Guttersen, who have lived in Napa Valley for more than thirty years with their children. Shawn grew up on a working cattle ranch in Colorado and is a partner in a long-standing California waste management and recycling company. Connie is a New York Times bestselling culinary author and longtime faculty member at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone.
The wine is a single Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Block D of the Vangone Estate, high on the eastern ridges at the base of Haystack Mountain, at 1,672 feet on rocky, volcanic soil with 20-year-old vines. Winemaker Roberto Alfaro, who started in the vineyards with David Abreu in 2000, makes it with Sam Kaplan at Arkenstone, aging it two years in French oak and at least a year in bottle.
Freedom Estate sells to its mailing list and through its online shop, and publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you up into the eastern hills to three sought-after estates that do host.
Freedom Estate does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn.
Since Freedom Estate does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort, at the foot of Atlas Peak, is about 15 minutes from the first stop up Atlas Peak Road, and Milliken Creek Inn, on the Napa River off the Silverado Trail, about 20 minutes. The day fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 20 minutes away. A small family winery with a rock-hewn cave at about 1,600 feet on Atlas Peak, where visits pair valley views with barrel samples. Fees to be verified upon reservation; only a limited number of tastings each week, arranged with the proprietor, and we allow about an hour.
About 20 minutes away. A family winery that tours guests through the twists and turns of The Caves at Soda Canyon and ends with one of the valley's great views. The Patland Caves Experience is $75, about 90 minutes. By appointment, at least 24 hours ahead.
About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Grace's Table on Second Street in downtown Napa, a sit-down local favorite open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. A small family winery that began in a Brooklyn apartment and now pours single-vineyard wines in Napa's Crusher District, with barrel tastings at the winery. The Private Barrel Tasting is $100, 60 to 90 minutes. By prior reservation; bookings for the next month open on the 15th.
Back by about 4:20 p.m., a little over six hours after pickup.
About $175 per person in published tasting fees for Patland and Crosby Roamann, plus VinRoc's fee, which is confirmed upon reservation. Fees are paid directly to each winery.
VinRoc hosts only a few tastings a week, and Crosby Roamann opens bookings for the next month on the 15th, so we reserve both early. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.
