About the Winery

The winery on this Silverado Trail hillside north of Calistoga was founded in 1969 by Thomas Cotrell and Thomas Parkhill, two Silicon Valley engineers, and for decades it was the original home of Cuvaison. Philip Togni made the wine after publisher Oakleigh Thorne bought it in 1974, and the Schmidheiny family of Switzerland owned it for 36 years from 1979. In March 2015 Brandon Chaney and Anthony Zabit bought it and renamed it Fairwinds.

The partners named it for their love of being on the water, with nautically named wines such as Blind Eye Cabernet, Fathom Chardonnay and True Colors Malbec. The September 2020 Glass Fire destroyed the main building, the tasting room and the bottling line. The 22,000-square-foot cave and the wine inside survived, and Fairwinds poured there by appointment while it planned to rebuild.

On August 25, 2026, a deed recorded the sale of the property, for about $12.8 million, to Calistoga Farms LLC, managed by vintner Michael Kennedy of Fraîche Wine Group. The new owners are creating The Calistoga Club, a private members' estate expected to open in 2027. They did not buy the Fairwinds brand, which still sells wine online, but the estate no longer receives Fairwinds guests.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Four Seasons Napa Valley or Indian Springs.

10:00 · Pickup at Four Seasons Napa Valley or Indian Springs

Since Fairwinds no longer hosts visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after Calistoga estates nearby that do. Four Seasons Napa Valley, a resort among its own vines south of Calistoga, and Indian Springs, a hot springs resort in town, are each about 8 to 10 minutes from the first stop on the Silverado Trail. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Phifer Pavitt Wine

About 10 minutes away. A family estate on the Silverado Trail born from a weekly date night, with tastings in its Winery and Tasting Barn, a short way up the road from the old Fairwinds gate. The tasting of current releases is $95, waived with three bottles of Cabernet; we plan about an hour. By appointment only, and space is very limited.

11:35 · Jericho Canyon Vineyard

About 15 minutes away. A family estate of steep hillside terraces in a remote canyon above Calistoga, toured by ATV before you taste. The Private Estate Tasting with the ATV vineyard tour is $100, about 75 minutes. By appointment only.

1:10 · Lunch at Solbar

About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Solbar, the restaurant at Solage in Calistoga, serving lunch Monday through Saturday from 11:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:30 · Tom Eddy Winery

About 10 minutes away. A small family winery and cave on a hillside ranch above Calistoga, where the owner leads a tour of the property, winery and cave. The Current Release Tasting with cheese and charcuterie is $100, 1.5 to 2 hours. By appointment only, Monday to Saturday at 10:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m.

4:20 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:45 p.m., about six and three-quarter hours after pickup.

About $295 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Tom Eddy is closed on Sundays and Solbar serves lunch Monday to Saturday, so this day works Monday to Saturday. Tom Eddy's owner-led visit can run two hours, so the day ends about 4:45 p.m.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
