About the Winery

Bill and Dawnine Dyer moved to Calistoga in 1974 to make wine. Bill rose from cellar worker to winemaker at Sterling Vineyards, where a Diamond Mountain Cabernet became one of his favorite single-vineyard wines, and Dawnine spent 25 years as winemaker at Domaine Chandon. In 1993 they planted their own vineyard on 12 acres on Diamond Mountain, and in 1996 they started Dyer Straits Wine Co.

The vineyard is dry-farmed with sustainable practices and planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in the volcanic soils of the Diamond Mountain District. The label comes from a mural the couple saw at Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet in 1998, showing the Diamond Mountains of a Buddhist scripture. Bill died at home on April 18, 2026, and Dawnine carries on his legacy at Dyer Vineyard.

Dyer wines are sold through the shop on the winery's website, and questions go to the winery by phone or email. The website offers no tastings or visits; this is a small family vineyard and home. Diamond Creek, one of the mountain's founding estates, is a neighbor on Diamond Mountain Road, and the day below starts there before two more estates nearby that welcome guests.
