About the Winery
Walter and Joan Teachworth moved their young family to Napa Valley in the early 1990s and slowly put together an estate on Diamond Mountain, just south of Calistoga. They planted their vineyards in 1997, and by 2000 the first Teachworth vintage was in barrel. Today their children, Chris and Laura Teachworth, look after the estate and carry on their parents' plan.
The estate sits on a northwest-facing slope of the Mayacamas Range at about 700 to 850 feet, with a hand-tended vineyard surrounded by about 75 acres of mature forest. The focus is Cabernet Sauvignon from mountain fruit, blended with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Winemaker Taylor Berkley Boydstun runs daily operations in a winery with a small underground cave.
Visits are by appointment only, and each tasting is private to your group. You taste the current release Cabernet Sauvignon and other estate wines while the team talks through the land, the vintage and the family's story. Plan on 60 to 90 minutes. It is a quiet, personal visit, well suited to guests who want to learn about mountain Cabernet.

$100 for the private Essence of Teachworth tasting, 60 to 90 minutes. The fee is waived with the purchase of three estate wines.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley, on the Silverado Trail just south of town, and Indian Springs Calistoga, a mineral springs resort on Lincoln Avenue in Calistoga, are each about 5 minutes from Teachworth. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

12:00 · Bremer Family Winery
About 15 minutes away. A family estate up Deer Park Road toward Howell Mountain, around a stone winery built into the hillside in 1891 as the original Sutter Home Winery. A tasting of five current releases is $45 (waived with two bottles per person), about an hour, with a cave tour on request. By appointment daily, last tasting at 4 p.m.; up to 6 guests, larger parties call ahead; kids and leashed dogs welcome.

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Gott's Roadside on Main Street in St. Helena, the original location of the roadside burger stand, opened in 1999, with outdoor tables and service daily from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 20 minutes away. A small family winery just north of downtown Calistoga, where the staff who pour also work on the wines. The Estate Tasting of at least four wines, outdoors in the garden, is $35 and runs 60 to 90 minutes; we plan on about an hour. By appointment, with seatings on the half hour until 3 p.m.

Adds about an hour. A Calistoga family estate that pours at the Wine Train Collective in the historic Calistoga Depot. Walk-ins are welcome (weekends may need a reservation); tastings are $35, Friday to Monday, noon to 6 p.m.
