Al and Boots Brounstein founded Diamond Creek in 1968 on Diamond Mountain, just south of Calistoga. Al had caught the wine bug at a UCLA tasting seminar and worked part time at Ridge Vineyards before he found the land. He first saw it from the back of a realtor's pickup truck and said, "I love this spot. I'm going to buy it."
Clearing the hillside, Al found three different soils within a few hundred yards, so he planted four separate vineyards: Volcanic Hill, Gravelly Meadow, Red Rock Terrace and the tiny Lake vineyard. Each is bottled on its own, never blended. In 1981 a case of the first Lake Cabernet, from 1978, drew the top bid at the Napa Valley Wine Auction. The Diamond Mountain District estate has about 20 planted acres.
In 2020 the Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer bought the estate, a friendship that began at a Paris dinner in 1997. Visits are private and small, for up to six guests: a seated tasting of the single-vineyard Cabernets, then a guided UTV ride through the 80-acre estate and its vineyards.
$250 per person for the Signature Tasting, a private seated tasting of the single-vineyard Cabernets followed by a guided UTV tour of the estate, about 90 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Four single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from one Diamond Mountain estate: Volcanic Hill, Gravelly Meadow, Red Rock Terrace and Lake. Lake, from a three-quarter-acre vineyard, is made only in the best vintages.
The Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer, who bought it in 2020 from the family of founders Al and Boots Brounstein.
Al Brounstein believed each site had its own character. When a retailer asked him to blend his three Cabernets into one, he said he would do it as soon as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti blended La Tâche and Richebourg.
