About the Winery
Double R Wine Co. is a Napa-based wine company founded by David Green, a wine executive with more than 20 years in luxury California wine who has led or advised companies including Dana Estates, Joel Gott Wines, Lede Family Wines and Clos du Val. Its motto is 'democratizing deliciousness,' and its approach, in its words, is thoughtful farming, honest winemaking and an unwavering commitment to quality.
Director of winemaking Maayan Koschitzky has worked at Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle, was named one of Wine Enthusiast's '40 under 40,' and is director of winemaking at Atelier Melka. The brands are Ride & Ridden Wine Co., a collaboration between Green and Texas artist and photographer Steve Wrubel that makes Wines of the West, including a Napa Valley Cabernet; Royal Prince; and Palmier Royale, made with resorts for their guests.
The wines are sold through each brand's own website and through distributors, retailers and restaurants. Double R lists an office in downtown Napa but no tasting room, so it does not receive visitors. The day below stays around the city of Napa, at three family wineries that do host, with lunch in Carneros.

Andaz Napa, a boutique Hyatt hotel, and Archer Hotel Napa, with its rooftop bar, are both in downtown Napa, about 10 minutes from the first stop. The day runs under six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 10 minutes away. Rolando and Lorena Herrera's family winery in south Napa, where a behind-the-scenes tour of the working cellar ends with a seated tasting in the barrel room. The Winery Tour & Tasting is $65, five wines with chocolate truffles; we plan about 75 minutes. By appointment, Monday to Saturday.

About 10 minutes away. A family label from the vineyard manager who once ran To Kalon and Opus One, poured in downtown Napa with Oaxacan mole pairings. The Tradition Tasting Experience is $60, 45 to 60 minutes; Roots & Flavors, six wines with three moles, is $125. Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; reservations encouraged.

About 15 minutes away. An urban winery and nano-brewery in the city of Napa, with seated tastings in a greenhouse inside its culinary garden. The seated Wine Tasting of four small-lot wines is $60 to $125; we allow about an hour. Open Thursday to Monday, noon to 6 p.m.; reservations recommended.
