Winemaker and brewmaster Elaine St. Clair and president Laina Brown founded St. Clair Brown in 2010, after more than 24 years working together at wineries such as Domaine Carneros and Black Stallion. They opened the doors in 2013 on what had been a deserted lot and former machine shop in the city of Napa, and launched the nano-brewery in 2018.
Elaine has made wine in Napa Valley for more than 30 years. She studied winemaking and brewing at UC Davis, and in the 1990s she was head brewer and co-owner of Napa Ale Works, one of the valley's original breweries. The wines and beers are made in very small amounts and are not sold in stores; the estate vineyards are about four miles away in Coombsville.
The setting is the draw. Tastings take place in a greenhouse inside the culinary garden, among raised beds and fruit trees, in the Rail Arts District five blocks from First Street. A small garden-to-table menu is available, and you can taste wine, beer or house-made zero-proof garden drinks, which makes it an easy stop for a mixed group. From November to early March, service moves to the winery across the street.
$25 for the Beer Tasting, three 6 oz. pours. $30 for the Zero Proof Tasting, three house-made garden drinks. $60 to $125 for the Wine Tasting, a seated tasting of four 2 oz. pours of small-lot wines. The winery does not publish durations; we allow about an hour.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

St. Clair Brown opens at noon, so we start the morning on Mount Veeder and finish the day in its garden. Archer Hotel Napa and Andaz Napa are both in downtown Napa, about 20 minutes from Hess Persson and about 5 minutes from St. Clair Brown. The day below fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
