Diamond & Key

About the Winery

Diamond & Key belongs to NBA champion Klay Thompson and baseball star Nolan Arenado, a nine-time Gold Glove winner, who met through their families in Los Angeles. The project began in 2017, when Thompson got to know Napa's wine community while supporting wildfire relief. The two chose to be involved in the winemaking itself rather than pick barrels from a large producer.

Winemaker Joe Harden, formerly of Nickel & Nickel and Salty Goats, played college basketball at Notre Dame and UC Davis and professionally in Australia before turning to wine. The first vintage, 2018, was a Cabernet Sauvignon from Panek Vineyard in St. Helena. Today the label makes two wines a year: a rosé released in spring and a Cabernet Sauvignon released in fall.

The wines are sold through the online shop at diamondandkey.com; the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is due in fall 2026, and the mailing list announces each release. The brand lists Napa as its home and publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do.

Tasting Fees

Diamond & Key does not offer tastings.

10:00 · Pickup at Andaz Napa or Archer Hotel Napa

Since Diamond & Key does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Andaz Napa, a boutique Hyatt hotel, and Archer Hotel Napa are both in downtown Napa, about 20 minutes from the first stop in Wooden Valley. The day fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:20 · Altamura Vineyards & Winery

About 20 minutes away. A family ranch with caves and a stone winery in quiet Wooden Valley, east of the city of Napa. The hosted tasting of four estate wines with a meat and cheese platter is $75; we allow about 75 minutes. By appointment; no guests under 21 and no pets.

11:55 · Lunch at Oenotri

About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Oenotri on First Street in downtown Napa, an Italian restaurant serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:15 · Whetstone Wine Cellars

About 8 minutes away. A family winery pouring single-vineyard wines in a restored 19th-century French-style chateau at the base of Atlas Peak Road. The Classic Tasting of four wines is $65, 60 to 90 minutes. Open Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., last seating at 3 p.m.; 21 and over.

2:45 · Institution Winery

About 15 minutes away. A small label made with winemaker Russell Bevan, poured in a relaxed room at HQ Winery on Hoffman Lane just outside Yountville. Tasting reservations are $75 to $200 depending on the wines; we plan about 75 minutes. By appointment for parties of one to six.

4:00 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:15 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup.

About $215 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Whetstone is open Thursday to Monday, so plan this day for one of those days. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
