Frank and Karen Altamura, both Napa natives, founded Altamura Vineyards and Winery in 1985. The ranch in Wooden Valley was settled by members of Karen's family in 1855, and the winery calls itself the only winery in Wooden Valley within the Napa Valley appellation. Frank trained at Sterling from 1976 and spent five years at Caymus under Charlie Wagner before making his own wine.
The 400-acre ranch was a cattle ranch until the Altamuras cleared 65 acres and planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese on six sites among the valley oaks. They dug caves and built a stone winery. Their son Giancarlo, a Cal Poly graduate in viticulture and enology, is the assistant winemaker, and the winery reports an average Wine Spectator score above 91 points for ten Cabernet vintages.
Wooden Valley is a quiet side valley east of the city of Napa, and the drive out through the hills is part of the pleasure. Visits are private, hosted tastings of four estate wines with a meat and cheese platter, while your host tells the history of the ranch and how it is farmed. Weekend tastings are now available as well.
$75 per person for the hosted tasting of four estate wines with a meat and cheese platter, by appointment.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
