Founder Hank McCrorie earned the nickname Burly Bear from the local paper in his college football days, and the name became the wine. The oak tree on the label joins the two founders' childhoods: Hank's in North Carolina among live oaks, and Bernice's on her family's ranch in Northern California, where similar oaks grow. The family's McCrorie Family Vineyard runs the label, with its office in Hickory, North Carolina.
The fruit comes from the Simpkins family's vineyard in the Coombsville AVA, just east of the city of Napa, where cooler weather allows long hang time and rocky, well-drained loam keeps yields low. Winemaker Massimo Monticelli makes a Cabernet built on tannin and oak with velvety, layered fruit. Current releases include 2022 Cabernets from the Simpkins and Sciandri vineyards, a Special Selection and a 2023 Chardonnay. Production is usually 2,000 cases or less.
Burly is sold direct by phone, shipped to most states with a three-bottle minimum, and poured in restaurants and fine wine shops around the country. The winery publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, including the Coombsville family behind the Sciandri vineyard.
Burly does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Burly does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort is about 12 minutes from the first stop on the east side of Napa, and The Inn on First, a bed and breakfast in town, about 15. The day runs a little over six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 12 minutes away. A small family winery at the base of Mt. George, built by hand by its owners, who host every visit themselves on the terrace, in the winery and in the caves. The hosted experience is $80; visits run up to two hours, and we plan 90 minutes. By appointment only.
About 10 minutes away. A family winery pouring single-vineyard wines in a restored 19th-century French-style chateau at the base of Atlas Peak Road. The Classic Tasting of four wines is $65, 60 to 90 minutes; we plan an hour. Open Thursday to Monday from 11 a.m.; last seating at 3 p.m.
About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Kitchen Door in downtown Napa, a sit-down restaurant on First Street. Lunch runs from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and from 12:30 p.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. A Tuscan-rooted Coombsville family whose vineyard also supplies Burly, hosting a Cave Tour at The Caves at Soda Canyon with current releases and a cheese and cracker board. $65 to $75, about 90 minutes, by reservation.
Back by about 4:20 p.m., a little over six hours after pickup.
About $210 to $220 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Whetstone is open Thursday to Monday, so this is a Thursday to Monday plan. Mount George and Sciandri are unhurried, hosted visits, so the day runs a little over six hours.
