Oak Knoll District · Napa Valley
A winery on the grounds of a 1950s equestrian center on the Silverado Trail, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.
Book a Six-Hour Wine Tour
The winery stands on the site of the Silverado Horseman's Center, built in the 1950s by Richard Tam and Ben Hardister. It had an indoor riding track, 36 horse stalls and a half-mile race track whose stands sat 3,000 people. The building that held the indoor track now sits behind the tasting room and is used for winemaking.
Exclusive Estates Wine Group, part of the Indelicato family's wine business, bought the property in October 2005 and opened Black Stallion in July 2007. The family has grown grapes in California since 1924, when Gaspare Indelicato planted a vineyard in Manteca. Wine Enthusiast named Black Stallion its American Winery of the Year for 2023.
The estate sits in the Oak Knoll District at the corner of the Silverado Trail and Oak Knoll Avenue. Seated tastings are poured on outdoor patios and in the tasting room, and a quick bar tasting needs no reservation. The winemakers blend lots from vineyards across Napa Valley, sometimes down to a single row within a block.
$30 for the Bar Tasting, 30 minutes, no reservation needed. $55 for the seated Signature Tasting and $75 for the Unbridled Elegance Tasting, each about an hour. $60 for the Estate Picnic Lunch (21 and over, up to two hours).
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
