Napa · Napa Valley
A single, tiny-production Napa Valley Chardonnay from 2,000 Old Wente clone vines on a hillside east of the Oak Knoll District. Avenue 8 does not receive visitors; here is what to know, and a day at sought-after estates nearby that do host.

Avenue 8 makes one wine, a Napa Valley Chardonnay, and sells it directly through its founder, Dan, who takes orders by email. The winemaking, he writes, is a continuation of Jon Kongsgaard's Chardonnay techniques, with Christopher Vandendriessche guiding each fermentation while Dan apprentices. The wine is fermented in barrel with native yeasts and aged on its lees in French oak.
The vineyard is small: about 2,000 Old Wente clone Chardonnay vines on an east-facing hillside of mostly Haire loam, just east of the Oak Knoll District, north of Coombsville and south of Atlas Peak. The rootstock went in during the spring of 2015 and the Old Wente budwood was grafted in 2016. The first vintage was 2018, and production has run from about 109 to 230 cases a year.
There is no tasting room and no published address, so Avenue 8 does not receive visitors. The 2021 and 2022 vintages are available at $65 a bottle or $700 a case, with mixed cases of the two. The day below stays on the east side of Napa, near where the vines grow, with stops in the Oak Knoll District and along the Silverado Trail.
Avenue 8 does not offer tastings.
The day below visits Trefethen ($60), Pine Ridge ($60) and Darioush ($80), about $200 per person in tasting fees.
Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Avenue 8 does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort, at the foot of Atlas Peak, and Milliken Creek Inn, on the Silverado Trail, are both on the east side of Napa, about 10 to 15 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 10 minutes away. A family estate in the Oak Knoll District built around Napa Valley's last 19th-century wooden gravity-flow winery. Collectible Cabernet is $60, about an hour; reservations are required and prepaid.
About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill, a grill on Highway 29 just north of Yountville. We confirm lunch hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. Stags Leap Cabernet tasted in caves 130 feet underground. The Estate Tasting is $60, about an hour; open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., reservations strongly encouraged.
About 10 minutes away. A winery on the Silverado Trail inspired by ancient Persepolis. The Signature Tasting is $80, about an hour; open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. by prepaid reservation.
Back by about 3:50 p.m., about six hours after pickup.
About $200 per person in tasting fees at Trefethen, Pine Ridge and Darioush, paid directly to each winery.
All three wineries are open daily. Trefethen and Darioush take prepaid reservations, so we set the times when we book. For a longer day, add an hour and a fourth stop on the Silverado Trail.
