About the Winery

Arador, Spanish for ploughman, is the personal project of winemaker Roberto Alfaro, made for his wife, Carmen, and their sons, Omar and Andres. Roberto grew up helping his father farm a small plot outside Atacheo in Michoacán, Mexico, and by age twelve he could hitch the different ploughs to the family's horses.

He came to Napa Valley at 17 and planted and tended vineyards for David Abreu, then worked in the cellar at The Hess Collection and as cellar lead at Caldwell Vineyard, where he met Sam Kaplan. When Arkenstone on Howell Mountain readied its first harvest in 2008, Sam brought him on as assistant winemaker. Arador's Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah come from volcanic soils in the cool Coombsville AVA, and the 2021 Cabernet earned 94 points from Jeb Dunnuck.

The wines are offered to the mailing list, which is the way to buy them. Arador lists no tasting room, address or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after Coombsville estates nearby that do host, from a heritage house near downtown to caves in the hills.
