Coombsville · Napa Valley
A small family estate in the hills east of Napa, whose winemaker wrote the petition for the Coombsville appellation, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Frank Farella founded the winery in 1985 in a 400-square-foot building next to his house in Napa, after a test vintage in 1982 from young estate vines. His son Tom, a UC Davis graduate who worked in Sonoma, Burgundy and Oregon, made the wines from 1991 until 2018. Ryan Pass is now the winemaker, and he and Tom still do the work together.
The vineyard was first planted in 1979 and covers 26 acres on a hillside against the Vaca Mountains, with another 30 acres left as oak woodland. In 2009 Tom Farella wrote the petition for the Coombsville AVA, which became Napa Valley's 16th sub-appellation in 2011. Much of the fruit goes to other wineries; Farella keeps enough for about 1,800 cases a year.
Visits are private and personal, Monday through Friday by appointment, and sometimes the winemaker joins you. You taste estate Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Malbec, made in a small winery where the library goes back to 1985. It is a quiet, farm-like stop in the hills, far from the busy Highway 29 corridor.
$50 per person for a private tasting of estate wines, applied to on-site purchases of 6 bottles or more.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
