Entrepreneur Eric Yuan founded Acumen in 2012, building on a love of wine that began while he was studying in Paris. With founding winemaker Denis Malbec, a veteran of Château Latour, he found what he wanted high on Atlas Peak in Napa Valley's eastern mountains, where temperatures average about 10 degrees cooler than on the valley floor. Acumen bought its first vineyard there in 2012 and made its debut estate wines the next year.
That first vineyard, planted in 1992, was the home vineyard of Dr. Jan Krupp, three years before his famous Stagecoach Vineyard. In 2014 Acumen added Edcora Vineyard, 350 feet higher on the mountain. Winemaker Phillip Titus and vineyard manager Doug Hill now guide the estate, which sells most of its grapes to other top Napa wineries and keeps the favorite small blocks for Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Acumen sells its small-production wines on its website, with free shipping on six bottles or more, and through its newsletter. The estate does not host: "Our vineyard is currently not open to the public," the winery says, and it asks that questions go to info@acumenwine.com. The day below takes you to three estates on Atlas Peak and in Coombsville that do welcome guests.
Acumen does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Acumen does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, starting on Atlas Peak itself. We pick up at 9:30 a.m. because Antinori seats its morning tasting at 10 a.m. Silverado Resort, a golf and spa resort at the foot of Atlas Peak, is about 20 minutes from Antinori, and Milliken Creek Inn, on the Napa River off the Silverado Trail, about 25 minutes. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 20 minutes away. The Antinori family's mountain estate high on Atlas Peak, Acumen's own mountain, with a visit to the caves. The Estate Experience is a private seated tasting of four wines with light bites ($125, 90 minutes). By reservation request, Tuesday to Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
About 25 minutes away. A 3,800-acre mountain preserve in Napa's southeast corner, reached through a gate on Monticello Road. The Current Release Wine Tasting is $80 for 45 minutes; the Estate Tour & Tasting of the vineyards, tank room and cave ($110) runs 75 minutes and moves lunch back half an hour. By appointment only, seven days a week.
About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Oenotri on First Street in downtown Napa, an Italian restaurant serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 12 minutes away. A family estate on the historic Rapp Ranch in Coombsville, where you taste on the Grand Terrace and can add a horseback ride through the vineyard. Wine Tasting on the Grand Terrace, with a cheese and charcuterie board, is $95 for 90 minutes. Open daily by reservation; final seating at 3:30 p.m.
Back by about 4:15 p.m., about six and three-quarter hours after pickup.
About $300 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
