About the Winery

A.Aitch is the personal label of Ashley Hepworth, who made wine for more than two decades before putting her own initials on a bottle. She joined Joseph Phelps Vineyards as a harvest intern in 1999 and rose to winemaker there, working on wines including Insignia, before starting her own consulting business in 2023. She is also the winemaker at Phifer Pavitt in Calistoga and at Alluvium Estate in Coombsville.

The wine is a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the base of Rutherford's western bench, in the Rutherford AVA, and production is tiny: 139 cases. The winery describes notes of black cherry, cassis, tobacco and baker's chocolate, with dusty, fine-grained tannins and a refined finish. The name comes from her initials, and the label speaks of changing perspective to see things differently.

A.Aitch has no tasting room and lists no visits; the address on its site is a mailing suite in St. Helena. The wine is sold through the website and its mailing list, and the winery takes questions at wine@aaitchwine.com. So the day below goes to three Rutherford and Oakville estates that do host, each with a ride, a view or a setting worth the drive.

Tasting Fees

A.Aitch does not offer tastings.

10:00 · Pickup at Rancho Caymus Inn or Auberge du Soleil

Since A.Aitch does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Rancho Caymus Inn, at the Rutherford crossroads, and Auberge du Soleil, on the hillside above the Silverado Trail, are each about 15 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Oakville Ranch Vineyards

About 15 minutes away. A 370-acre mountain ranch 1,000 feet above Oakville, where the visit is an ATV ride through the vineyards to a valley overlook and an alfresco tasting of current releases by the pool. $100, about 1.5 hours; wear closed shoes. By prior appointment, Monday to Friday.

12:05 · Lunch at Bottega

About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Bottega, an Italian restaurant on Washington Street in Yountville, serving from 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to Sunday. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:35 · Fleury Estate Winery

About 15 minutes away. A small family winery on Galleron Road with private salon tastings of reserve wines and outdoor seating with panoramic valley views. The Reserve Wine Tasting is $95 for six wines, 45 to 60 minutes, waived with four bottles per guest. By appointment; hours are not published, so we confirm the time when we book.

2:50 · The Terraces

About 10 minutes away. A historic family ranch on the Silverado Trail where an owner or winemaker drives you through the vines by 4WD to old stone terraces and a balsamic acetaia before a seated tasting. The Terraces Experience is $90; we plan about 90 minutes. By appointment, for groups of up to five.

4:20 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:30 p.m., about six and a half hours after pickup.

About $285 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Oakville Ranch hosts Monday to Friday and Bottega is closed Mondays, so plan this day Tuesday to Friday. The Terraces takes up to five guests per visit. The day runs about six and a half hours, back by about 4:30 p.m.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
