About the Winery

Grapes have grown here since 1881, when Charles Scheggia cut terraces into the hillside, planted Zinfandel and Riesling and built a winery from stone quarried on the ranch. Wayne Hogue launched The Terraces label on part of the land in 1985. The Crull family bought the old ranch in 1992, reunited it with Hogue's parcel in 2000 and restored the stone winery two years later. Timm Crull is the proprietor.

The 113-acre ranch sits in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains in the Rutherford AVA. The 25-acre vineyard grows in fractured volcanic rhyolite, in 14 blocks, and the family has planted hundreds of trees around it for wildlife. There is an orchard of more than 40 heirloom apple varieties for cider, beehives, and an acetaia making traditional balsamic vinegar.

This is one of the most memorable visits we can set up. Groups of up to five taste one-on-one with an owner or winemaker. It starts with a 4WD tour through the vineyards to the historic ghost winery and ends with a barrel taste of 25-year-old balsamic in the acetaia, then a seated tasting in the salon or on the deck among works by native and emerging artists.

Tasting Fees

$90 per person for The Terraces Experience: a 4WD vineyard and ranch tour, a balsamic barrel tasting in the acetaia and a seated wine tasting with an owner or winemaker (one fee waived for every three bottles purchased).

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
