About the Winery
001 Vintners takes its name from retail license number 001, granted to Carmine Martignetti's Martignetti Grocery Company in Boston's North End after Prohibition ended in 1933. The family has brought Napa Valley wines to New England since the late 1970s. Third-generation principals Carmine and Beth Martignetti and their sons Freddie, Philip and Michael created this wine as their own.
The fruit comes from the Ecotone Vineyard, in its own small valley above St. Helena and below Howell Mountain, where old hillside vines root into rare white volcanic tufa. Grape grower Jack Bittner manages the vineyard, and Graeme MacDonald, a fourth-generation To Kalon grower, makes the wine at Hudson Napa Valley. Jeb Dunnuck gave the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon 99 points and the 2023 Merlot 98.
The wine is sold through the winery's mailing list, which is the way to acquire it. 001 Vintners lists no tasting room, address or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do host, starting on Pritchard Hill, just across the valley from the Ecotone hills.

Since 001 Vintners does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Meadowood, east of St. Helena below the Ecotone hills, is about 20 minutes from Pritchard Hill, and Alila Napa Valley in downtown St. Helena about the same. The day runs about six and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 20 minutes away. A 110-acre Pritchard Hill estate where the wine is grown and made on the same ground. The visit is $225 per person, with a winery tour, a flight of estate wines and small charcuterie; we allow about 90 minutes. By reservation only, with priority for mailing list members.

About 20 minutes away. A small St. Helena winery on Rossi Road with optional barrel tastings. The Current Release Tasting pours at least five wines over 90 minutes for $75. By appointment, Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Rutherford Grill, at Highway 29 and Rutherford Road, open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 15 minutes away. MaryAnn and Larry Tsai's label of Howell Mountain, To Kalon and Pritchard Hill wines made by Philippe Melka, poured at the Brasswood estate north of St. Helena. The guided Wine Tasting is $125, about an hour. By appointment, daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
