About the Property

Madeira House is an 11-room inn in Jenner, on the Sonoma Coast where the Russian River meets the Pacific. The rooms are spread across three houses, Madeira House, River House and Boat House, each with views of the river mouth, and the design is by Moksa Studio. It has been featured in Travel + Leisure, Sunset and Sonoma Magazine.

The Madeira Garden has California native plants, Pride of Madeira and walking paths, with fire pits and blankets for sunset drinks, and a waterfront deck looks over the river and ocean. Redwood Social, the lounge at the main entrance, stocks grab-and-go local food and drinks. There is no front desk: check-in instructions and an access code arrive by email the day before. Dogs are welcome in some rooms for a fee.

It is also a remarkable place to start a wine tour. Fort Ross Vineyard & Winery, high on the coastal ridge, and Sonoma Coast Vineyards on Bodega Bay are each about 20 minutes away, and Korbel is about 25 minutes up the Russian River. We are based in Calistoga, in neighboring Napa Valley.

Getting Here From the Airport

Sonoma County Airport (STS): about 28 miles, 55 minutes. The closest airport to Madeira House, and the easiest arrival: a small airport in Santa Rosa with no Bay Area traffic on the drive. Direct flights come in from Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and more.

Oakland (OAK): about 90 miles, 2 hours 15 minutes. Often a quieter airport than SFO.

San Francisco International (SFO): about 90 miles, 2 hours 20 minutes, and longer at busy times. The most flights, with a drive across the Bay Area.

Sacramento (SMF): about 122 miles, 3 hours. Skips Bay Area traffic entirely, though it is the longest drive of the four.

About 20 minutes away. Cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc on a terrace over Bodega Bay. The Taste of the Coast, a guided flight of four current releases, is $35, about an hour. Open daily from 11 a.m.

2:15 · Black Kite Cellars

About 15 minutes away. Single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley, poured at Jasper House in the hamlet of Freestone. The seated Jasper House Experience of six wines is $40. Prepaid reservations.

About 35 minutes away. Back by 4:00 p.m., six hours after pickup.

Adds about 90 minutes. Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley Pinot Noir made by Ross Cobb with Les Claypool, on Highway 116 near Forestville. A tasting of five wines is $35. Walk-ins welcome; closed Tuesday.
