Rick Moshin was teaching mathematics at San Jose State University in the late 1970s when he took up winemaking as a hobby. In 1989 he planted his first Pinot Noir vineyard and founded Moshin Vineyards, at a time when the Russian River Valley was only beginning to earn its name for Pinot Noir, working alongside pioneers such as Davis Bynum, Gary Farrell and Joe Rochioli. The winery is still independent and family owned: his sister Janet helps run the business and his wife Amber leads the marketing.
With family and friends, Rick designed and built one of California's first gravity-flow wineries, a four-level cellar where grapes and wine move down from the crush pad to the tanks to the barrels by gravity rather than pumps, which is gentler on thin-skinned Pinot Noir. The wines are made in small lots with a minimal-intervention approach, from Pinot Noir to Chardonnay and seasonal releases.
The tastings are relaxed and conversational, and guests are encouraged to ask why fog matters or to compare Pinot Noir clones; Rick, who now teaches wine as Professor Pinot, is often around the vineyard and cellar. Jasper is the resident winery dog. It is about 10 miles southwest of Healdsburg among the vineyards of Westside Road.
$40 per person for the Classic Wine Tasting, waived with the purchase of two bottles per person. $50 per person plus 20% gratuity for groups of 7 to 10.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:50 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Healdsburg or The Madrona.
Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, is about 25 minutes from Moshin, and The Madrona, a 24-room hotel on a historic estate on Westside Road, about 20. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
The first stop. The Classic Wine Tasting of current releases ($40), with time to look at the gravity-flow cellar.
About 25 minutes away. James Beard finalists Mark and Terri Stark's tapas bar on Center Street, steps from the Healdsburg plaza, with paella, Spanish wines and tables indoors or outside. Open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. The Russian River Valley winery of the Duncan family of Silver Oak, a modern building with a curving roof that follows the hills, glass walls and wraparound patios looking out to Mount St. Helena and Geyser Peak. The seated Twomey Single Vineyard tasting of four Pinot Noirs is $55 and lasts an hour. Reservations recommended; open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
About 15 minutes away. A 53-acre estate on a dead-end lane in the far northeast corner of the Russian River Valley, where the 1910 Block of old-vine Zinfandel still grows, and a genuinely acclaimed name: Wine Spectator ranked its 2012 Zinfandel No. 12 on its Top 100. The seated tasting, outdoors among the vines when the weather allows, is $40, waived with a three-bottle purchase. By appointment, seven days a week.
Back in Healdsburg by 4:25 p.m.
