Inn St. Helena, formerly the Ambrose Bierce House, is a bed and breakfast at the north end of Main Street. The main house was built in 1872 and was the home of the writer Ambrose Bierce; with the 1910 Cottage House and a loft studio, there are eight rooms, each with a private bath.
A homemade breakfast is included, and there is an outdoor hot tub, gardens and a back patio. Some rooms have fireplaces, jetted tubs or a steam shower, and the loft studio has its own kitchen. Downtown's restaurants and tasting rooms are a short walk.
It is also an easy place to start a wine tour. Merryvale Vineyards, Charles Krug Winery and Markham Vineyards are all within about 5 minutes, and Calistoga is about 15 minutes north. We are based in Calistoga, a short drive up the valley.
Sonoma County Airport (STS): about 27 miles, 50 minutes. The closest airport to Inn St. Helena and the easiest arrival: a short drive over the hills from Santa Rosa, with no Bay Area traffic. Direct flights come in from Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and more.
San Francisco International (SFO): about 77 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes, and 2 hours or more at busy times. The most flights, with the longest drive, across the Bay Area and up through Napa Valley.
Oakland (OAK): about 69 miles, 1 hour 30 minutes. Often a quieter airport than SFO, and a slightly shorter drive.
Sacramento (SMF): about 82 miles, about 1 hour 45 minutes. Skips Bay Area traffic entirely, though it is the longest drive of the four.
Flying private? We also meet guests at the FBOs at STS and Napa County Airport (APC). See our Sonoma County Airport car service page for more on flying into STS.
