The Highlands is an adults-only resort on nearly three acres of redwoods and gardens, up Woodland Drive off Armstrong Woods Road. It dates to the early 1920s as Highland Park Lodge, has been an LGBTQ+ resort since 1979, and has had its current owners since 2021. Guests stay in cabins, suites and rooms, plus seasonal platform-tent glamping.
Cabins have gas fireplaces and no TVs. A continental breakfast is included from 8:30 to 10 a.m., the heated pool is open from April 1 to October 20, and the lobby sells local wine, beer and snacks. Dogs are welcome in three cabins.
It is also an easy place to start a wine tour. Korbel Champagne Cellars, Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery and Hartford Family Winery are all within about 20 minutes. We are based in Calistoga, in neighboring Napa Valley.
Sonoma County Airport (STS): about 15 miles, 35 minutes. The closest airport to The Highlands, and the easiest arrival: a small airport in Santa Rosa with no Bay Area traffic on the drive. Direct flights come in from Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and more.
Oakland (OAK): about 82 miles, 1 hour 55 minutes. Often a quieter airport than SFO.
San Francisco International (SFO): about 82 miles, 2 hours, and longer at busy times. The most flights, with a drive across the Bay Area.
Sacramento (SMF): about 111 miles, around 2 hours. Skips Bay Area traffic entirely, though it is the longest drive of the four.
Flying private? We also meet guests at the FBOs at STS and Napa County Airport (APC). See our Sonoma County Airport car service page for more on flying into STS.
