George Davis bought the Porter Creek estate on Westside Road in 1978, when it already held young Pinot Noir vines. He improved the vineyards, planted more, and in 1982 bonded one of the old barns on the property for winemaking, a year before the Russian River Valley was recognized as an American Viticultural Area. His son Alex Davis, who grew up on the property, is now owner and winemaker.
Alex studied at Santa Rosa Junior College and Fresno State, worked harvests in Burgundy with the Roumier and Michelot-Mestre families, completed a year of viticulture and enology study at the Université de Bourgogne, and worked vintages in the Rhône Valley and South Africa before returning full time in 1997. One estate parcel was planted in 1973, making it one of the oldest Pinot Noir vineyards in the Russian River Valley. The steep estate vineyards were certified organic by 2003, and the roughly quarter of the grapes Porter Creek buys must be grown with no synthetic chemicals.
Tastings are poured at the wine bar in the small tasting room or at one of 20 outdoor tables with views over the vines. The Grand Tasting pours one Chardonnay and four Pinot Noirs, all grown, made, bottled and labeled on site, plus a surprise pour, and Alex leads private tours of the vineyards by four-wheel drive or on foot.
$50 for the Grand Tasting of one Chardonnay and four Pinot Noirs, waived with a 2-bottle purchase. Outdoor tables add a $25 non-refundable fee. $125 for a private vineyard and winery tour with owner and winemaker Alex Davis, ending with the Grand Tasting, for 2 to 5 guests.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
