About the Winery

Devon and Jessica Mullen founded Tremolo in 2022. Devon, from Andover, Massachusetts, is a record producer and touring indie musician, known on stage as Dizzy Dames; Jessica, raised in Palo Alto, managed his tours after the two met at a music festival in 2018. Jessica is the niece of Renae and Bruce Perry of Papapietro Perry Winery, and the couple spent harvests there before settling in Healdsburg and joining the winery full-time in 2020. The idea for a label of their own came from a magnum of 1998 Pinot Noir that the late Bruce Perry gave Devon, labeled with nothing but a strip of masking tape.

Devon was mentored by two Pinot Noir winemakers, Ben Papapietro and David Low, and Jessica by Renae Perry on the business side. Tremolo specializes in single-vineyard, single-clone Pinot Noir from Leras Vineyards, which the winery calls one of Sonoma County's oldest and most renowned growers, and also makes a Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc. Wine Enthusiast gave the 2022 Pommard Clone Pinot Noir 94 points and an Editors' Choice, and the 2023 667 Clone Pinot Noir 93 points. The name is a musical term, and each release comes with a playlist.

Tremolo sells its wine online and through its club, which ships Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in spring and fall. The winery's website lists no tasting room or visiting program. For a day of small family wineries in the same circle, we take guests to wineries nearby that do open their doors, starting with Papapietro Perry.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:45 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Healdsburg or Hotel Trio.

10:45 · Pickup at Hotel Healdsburg or Hotel Trio

Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, and Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of town, are each about 15 minutes from Papapietro Perry. Since Tremolo does not host visitors, this day takes you to three wineries nearby that do, starting with the family winery where Tremolo's founders learned the trade. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Papapietro Perry Winery

About 15 minutes away. Pinot Noir and Zinfandel from two friends, Ben Papapietro and Bruce Perry, who began making wine in a San Francisco garage in the early 1980s; the winery is still owned by both families. The seated Signature Tasting of five current releases is 75 minutes ($35), and the Reserve Tasting of five reserve wines is $50, Friday to Sunday. Book ahead; open daily 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for tasters 21 and over.

12:30 · Lunch at Catelli's

About 15 minutes away. Santi and Virginia Catelli opened this Geyserville restaurant in 1936, and their granddaughter, chef Domenica Catelli, carries on the family's handmade Italian cooking. Open Wednesday to Sunday from noon; we reserve the table for you. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:00 · Unti Vineyards

About 15 minutes away. George and Linda Unti planted here in 1990 and started the winery in 1997; the family farms about 60 organic acres of Mediterranean varieties, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Barbera and Montepulciano among them, with Fiano and Vermentino for whites. A tasting of six wines of your choice is $25, waived with a bottle purchase. By reservation, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tastings starting on the hour.

3:15 · Stressed Vines Cellars

About 15 minutes away. Rob Barney's boutique label for wines from old, dry-farmed and high-elevation vines, made by Erica Stancliff, who trained with Paul Hobbs. A guided tasting in the Healdsburg Avenue tasting room: the Winemaker's Flight is $35 and the Vintner's Flight of reserve wines $45. By appointment.

4:15 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 4:20 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Papapietro Perry opens at 11 and Catelli's serves lunch Wednesday to Sunday, so this day starts at 10:45, works Wednesday to Sunday and ends around 4:20.

About $95 to $120 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
