Stressed Vines Cellars is founder Rob Barney's tribute to wines from vines that have had to struggle: old vines, dry-farmed vines and high-elevation vineyards. The idea is in the name and the registered motto, Stressed Vines make better wine: the harder a vine works to ripen its fruit, the more concentrated the flavor, the better the acid balance and the smoother the tannins. What began as a hobby, in the winery's words, has turned into an obsession.
Stressed Vines is a small producer, making a limited number of cases of Chardonnay, rosé, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon from growers across Napa and Sonoma counties: Annapolis on the West Sonoma Coast, Ponderosa Vines on Howell Mountain, Nosotros on Mount Veeder, Pine Mountain Vineyard in the Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak appellation, Gordenker in the Moon Mountain District, Reynoso Family in Alexander Valley and Peugh, Eden and Indindoli in the Russian River Valley. Winemaker Erica Stancliff, a Fresno State enology graduate, learned under Paul Hobbs, became winemaker at Trombetta Family Wines in 2014 and is also enologist for CIRQ; her approach is minimal intervention.
The Healdsburg tasting room is on Healdsburg Avenue, a few minutes from the plaza and the town's hotels, and every visit is a guided tasting of current releases. Choose the Winemaker's Flight, Erica's pick across the range, or the Vintner's Flight of Rob's favorite reserve wines, and add a locally made cheese and charcuterie box. The winery also has a second tasting room in Richardson, Texas.
$35 for the Winemaker's Flight, chosen by winemaker Erica Stancliff. $45 for the Vintner's Flight of reserve wines chosen by Rob Barney. $20 for a paired cheese and charcuterie box.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
