Michael Lancaster studied enology at UC Davis and worked at Gloria Ferrer and Quail Ridge Cellars before forming a partnership with friends in 2000 to launch Tin Barn Vineyards. He is still head winemaker and co-owner. Danielle Noce, who holds a master's in enology from Cornell and has worked harvests in several regions, joined as assistant winemaker before the 2023 harvest.
Tin Barn has been making wine for more than 25 years. It buys fruit from small, family-owned vineyards across Sonoma County, in Moon Mountain, Bennett Valley, the Petaluma Gap, Carneros, Sonoma Mountain and the Sonoma Coast, and makes sparkling, white, rosé and red wines in an approachable style, along with large-format bottles. In the winery's own words, it is all about the wine: no grand façade, just a winemaker passionate about his work.
The wines are sold online and through the Corrugated Wine Club, with library wines offered from time to time. Tin Barn's small tasting room sits next to its production cellar just off 8th Street East, south of the town of Sonoma, but the winery says it is temporarily closed to visitors. Until it reopens, we take guests to small estates nearby that do open their doors.
Tin Barn Vineyards does not offer tastings at present.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Sonoma hotel such as Ledson Hotel or MacArthur Place.
Ledson Hotel, on the east side of the Sonoma Plaza, and MacArthur Place, a few blocks south of the plaza, are each about 5 minutes from Sojourn's salon. Since Tin Barn does not host visitors at present, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 5 minutes away. Erich Bradley's Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet house, started in 2001 with his tennis partner Craig Haserot. The Tasting Salon off the Sonoma Plaza pours the same grape from different regions side by side, the clearest way to see what a vineyard does to a wine. The seated Comparative Tasting is $45, about 60 minutes. Daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., by prepaid reservation.
About 20 minutes away. Founded in 1999 by Pedro and Amelia Ceja with Armando and Martha Ceja, a family that began as vineyard workers in Napa Valley and pooled their savings to buy 15 acres in Carneros in 1983. The Ceja Wine Tasting Experience of at least five wines is $40, one hour. Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., last seating 2:30; reservations required.
About 15 minutes away. A roadhouse in a red barn on the Carneros Highway, named for a Carneros pioneer and known for its donuts and fried chicken. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; reservations are for dinner only, so lunch is walk-in. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 20 minutes away. Winegrower Tom Meadowcroft, who worked his first harvest in Bordeaux in 1979, pours his wines, including Cabernet from his own vineyard on Mount Veeder, in a tasting room among the gardens of Cornerstone Sonoma. The seated tasting of three wines is complimentary for up to 6 guests, and the Taste of Meadowcroft pairs four wines with seasonal dishes ($120, 72 hours' notice). Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations recommended, walk-ins as space allows.
Back in Sonoma by 3:15 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Ceja opens Friday to Sunday, so this day works Friday to Sunday.
About $85 per person in tasting fees for Sojourn and Ceja, paid directly to each winery; Meadowcroft's seated tasting is complimentary.
