About the Winery

Terra de Promissio, Latin for "land of promise," is a family vineyard in Petaluma. Charles and Diana Karren bought a former dairy ranch in 1999 and planted 33,000 vines over the next three years, with Diana's father and sister coming from Russia to help farm. The first harvest was in 2005, and plantings in 2012 and 2013 brought the vineyard to 50 acres of Pinot Noir.

The vineyard grows Dijon clones 115 and 777, plus 943, 97 and a field blend, in the wind and fog of the Petaluma Gap. Each block is custom farmed to the instructions of the winery buying it and picked at night. Buyers have included Williams Selyem, Gary Farrell, Dutcher Crossing, Castello di Amorosa, Domaine Della, Metzker Family, The Calling and Waypoint, and the vineyard supplied fruit for the 2009 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, Wine Spectator's 2011 Wine of the Year. From the 2013 harvest, Diana began making her own wine, Land of Promise.

Terra de Promissio is a working vineyard, and it hosts only members of its allocation list, by email request with four weeks' notice. The Land of Promise tasting room is in Fredericksburg, Texas. The day below stays in the Petaluma Gap, with three estates that host.
