Moon Mountain District · Sonoma County
Head-trained Sangiovese planted in 1998 on a Mayacamas hillside, farmed and made by one family amid a grove of native manzanita, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Manzanita Grove's Sangiovese vines were planted in 1998 in the traditional Tuscan head-pruned style, and Carol Cunningham and her husband, Hal, took ownership of the property in 2011. They learned through viticulture and enology courses at UC Davis and by tending the vines themselves. They made their first barrel in 2012, began selling their wine in 2016, and Carol has made the wine since then; their sons, Jacob and Samuel, work every harvest, pressing and bottling.
The small vineyard is on the southwest slope of the Mayacamas Mountains in the Moon Mountain District, on rocky volcanic soil and ringed by the native manzanita that first drew the family to the land. More than half the property is kept wild. The family farms with cover crops, native plantings, a hugelkultur bed, owl, kestrel, bat and bluebird boxes, and an olive orchard, and works with the Habitat Corridor Project in Kenwood. The wines are estate Sangiovese, a Sangiovese rosé, a blend and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a Sauvignon Blanc from 2025, and they have won medals at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and the Sonoma County Harvest Fair.
This is a family vineyard, not a tasting room. Tastings are arranged by contacting the family, and the visit is about walking the rows with the people who farm them. They also host ticketed events, such as winter truffle hunts with trained dogs paired with Sangiovese, and each season one or two private barrel projects, where a group makes its own custom-labeled barrel of wine.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
