About the Winery

La Prenda is family owned and run by Ned and Erika Hill, multi-generation Sonoma grape farmers whose La Prenda Vineyards Management has farmed some of the best vineyards in Sonoma for almost two decades. Ned's parents, Steve Hill and Gwen Parmelee Hill, bought the first parcel of what became the 65-acre Parmelee-Hill Vineyard in 1994, on part of the celebrated Durell Ranch where Sonoma Valley, the Sonoma Coast and Carneros meet, and planted it to Syrah.

Winemaker Mike Cox, a Sonoma native and 1991 UC Davis enology graduate, joined La Prenda in 2020 after 25 years working alongside the pioneering vintner Walter Schug. The wines come from the properties the family farms, more than 40 of them, among them Pickberry on the slope of Sonoma Mountain and Vineyard Station, farmed since 1998, which gives a rare Sonoma Malbec. The premium Fifth Hill label began with a Durell clone Syrah from the original Parmelee-Hill block, a tribute to Steve Hill. The vineyards are sustainably farmed, certified Fish Friendly for more than 20 years and certified by the California Land Stewardship Institute since 2020.

La Prenda closed its Sonoma tasting room, deciding a storefront no longer gave the kind of connection with people it once did, and continues to make and expand its wines. They are sold on the winery's website, with a local pick-up option, through the Legacy Wine Club and in restaurants and stores around Sonoma Valley. There is no visiting program, so for a day of tasting we take guests to small Carneros estates that host by appointment.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Sonoma hotel such as MacArthur Place or El Dorado Hotel.

10:00 · Pickup at MacArthur Place or El Dorado Hotel

MacArthur Place, a few blocks south of the plaza, and El Dorado Hotel, on the west side of the Sonoma Plaza, are each about 15 minutes from Blue Farm, the first stop. Since La Prenda does not host visitors, this day takes you to three small Carneros estates that do, each visit hosted by the people who make the wine. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Blue Farm

About 15 minutes away. Anne Moller-Racke, the viticulturist who founded The Donum Estate, makes small lots of grand cru-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the vineyard she planted in 2001 behind her blue Victorian farmhouse, about 3 miles south of the Sonoma Plaza. Private tastings of the current releases at the farm, Monday to Friday, booked at least 24 hours ahead; the fee is confirmed when we book.

11:30 · Grand Scheme Wines

A short drive away in Carneros; we confirm the address when we book. Tom and Krissy's organically farmed Barn House Vineyard, planted in 2019 on sticky Huichica clay in the Sonoma part of Carneros. The visit is a walk through the vines with the owners, then a relaxed tasting of the estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, rosé and Blanc de Blancs. Daily, by appointment only; the fee is confirmed when we book.

12:45 · Lunch at Cafe La Haye

About 15 minutes away. A small restaurant on East Napa Street, a few steps from the Sonoma Plaza, serving lunch Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations open a month ahead, for parties of up to 6, and we book the table with the rest of the day. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:10 · Toje

About 20 minutes away. A small-production label from Johannes, who grew up on a family winery in Germany's Mosel Valley, and Jenny, a Sonoma local. The Toje Table is a private, seated visit in the wine caves just south of Sonoma, hosted by the owners, with the current releases poured in full and a seasonal board, usually 90 to 120 minutes for 2 to 6 guests. By reservation; the fee is confirmed when we book.

3:55 · Back to your hotel

Back in Sonoma by 4:15 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Blue Farm hosts Monday to Friday and Cafe La Haye serves lunch Tuesday to Saturday, so this day works Tuesday to Friday; all three visits are by appointment, and we book them together.

Tasting fees at Blue Farm, Grand Scheme and Toje are not published and are to be verified upon reservation; each is paid directly to the winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
