About the Winery

Grand Scheme is the project of Tom and Krissy, who call themselves vignerons: they farm the vineyard, make the wine from it and run the business. Tom's Polish grandfather studied agriculture and fermentation at Lwów Polytechnic, and Tom left a business career when the wine bug bit in 2012, starting ess eff wines with partners and finishing the UC Davis Winemaking Certificate in 2018. Krissy found Italian wines while working in Boston's North End restaurants, worked at early San Francisco wine bars and earned her WSET Level 2. They bought their Sonoma property in 2014.

Barn House Vineyard was developed in 2018 and planted in 2019 as a deliberate microsite, with Dijon 115 and Pommard 4 Pinot Noir and Clone 4 Chardonnay on Huichica loam, a sticky clay found only in this stretch of Carneros. The parcel was once part of a chicken colony, then a cattle lot, then an organic vegetable cooperative, and the vineyard was certified organic by CCOF in 2024. Tom does the tractor work and the canopy work and makes the key winemaking calls, from pick date to punchdowns, with trusted custom-crush partners. The estate wines are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, an unoaked Chardonnay, rosé of Pinot Noir and a Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine, and the 2023 Estate Pinot Noir earned 93 points from Wine Enthusiast.

The visit is intimate and outdoors: a walk down the vineyard rows with the owners, talking about the cool Carneros climate, the clay soils and how they farm, followed by time to relax in the quiet Carneros setting with the wines from this site. For guests who want to stay among the vines, the Carneros Barn House on the property, a two-story barn-style home with two bedrooms and a chef's kitchen, sleeps four.

10:00 · Pickup at MacArthur Place or El Dorado Hotel

MacArthur Place, a few blocks south of the plaza, and El Dorado Hotel, on the west side of the Sonoma Plaza, are each about 15 minutes from Grand Scheme's vineyard in Carneros. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Grand Scheme Wines

A walk through Barn House Vineyard with the owners and a tasting of the estate wines, by appointment; fee to be verified upon reservation.

11:30 · Blue Farm

A short drive away in Carneros; we confirm the address when we book. Anne Moller-Racke, the viticulturist who founded The Donum Estate, makes small lots of grand cru-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the vineyard she planted in 2001 behind her blue Victorian farmhouse, about 3 miles south of the Sonoma Plaza. Private tastings of the current releases at the farm, Monday to Friday, booked at least 24 hours ahead; the fee is confirmed when we book.

12:50 · Lunch at Boon Fly Café

About 20 minutes away. A roadhouse in a red barn on the Carneros Highway, named for a Carneros pioneer and known for its donuts and fried chicken. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; reservations are for dinner only, so lunch is walk-in. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:15 · Cassidy Ranch

About 15 minutes away. Tucker and Elizabeth Stein's certified organic farm and 10-acre Carneros vineyard, founded in 2021, where guests can pick flowers, berries and produce among more than 100 varieties (the Flower & Berry U-Pick is $35). Wine tastings are by request, and we arrange them on your behalf; the fee is confirmed when we book.

3:15 · Back to your hotel

Back in Sonoma by 3:30 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a relaxed day. Blue Farm hosts Monday to Friday only, so this day works on weekdays; all three visits are by appointment, and we book them together.

Tasting fees at Grand Scheme, Blue Farm and Cassidy Ranch are not published and are to be verified upon reservation; each is paid directly to the winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
