Toje (say TOI-yuh) takes its name from a Mosel Valley dialect word for rootstock. Johannes, who grew up on a small family winery in Germany's Mosel Valley, came to Sonoma for a harvest in 2009 and met Jenny, a local who worked at the same winery; they married in 2013. Their first wine came in 2018, Sauvignon Blanc from the young vineyard at Sonoma Valley High School, which they helped students and the FFA tend. Their friend Patrick later joined them as a partner.
The wines come from a handful of single vineyards: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Ed Grossi's Sweet Lane Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap, Sauvignon Blanc from the Leveroni family's vineyard southwest of Sonoma, and Riesling from the historic Cole Ranch in Mendocino County. Fermentations are with native yeasts, the wines age in small French oak barrels, and many are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Toje has no tasting room in the usual sense. The Toje Table is a private, seated visit in the wine caves just south of the town of Sonoma, hosted by Jenny, Johannes or Patrick, with the current releases poured in full and a seasonal board for the time of day. It runs at its own pace, usually 90 minutes to two hours, and feels more like time at a friend's table than a tasting.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
