Gail Wines is the label of Dan O'Brien, who made a few barrels of wine in 2013 with no formal training in winemaking and named them for two women who shaped his life: his mother, Gail, and his great-aunt, Doris. Before that he spent ten years as a sommelier in Boston and was wine director at Cavallo Point, then worked at Larkmead Vineyards in Calistoga under Dan Petroski, at Long Meadow Ranch in St. Helena and as managing partner of Cultivar Wines, according to the Sonoma Index-Tribune.
Every Gail wine is grown, produced and bottled in Sonoma Valley. O'Brien makes single-vineyard wines with native yeasts, seeking out grapes few others in the valley work with: in 2020 the Index-Tribune listed a Chenin Blanc from Erich Bradley's vineyard on Warm Springs Road in Kenwood, a Chardonnay from the Chuy Vineyard on Nuns Canyon Road and a Merlot from Pickberry Vineyard, about 1,500 cases a year in all. The best lots go into Gail; the rest go into Doris, whose Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon blends Cabernet and Merlot from organically farmed vineyards.
Gail Wines has no tasting room and does not receive visitors. The wines turn up at independent wine shops, including Wine Library, K&L Wine Merchants and Leon & Son. The day below stays in Sonoma Valley, starting on Moon Mountain at Repris, a winery the Index-Tribune tied to Erich Bradley, the grower of Gail's Chenin Blanc.
Gail Wines does not offer tastings. On the day below, the Moon Mountain Vineyard experience at Repris is $125, the Comparative Tasting at Sojourn is $45, and the Rhinefarm Tasting at Gundlach Bundschu is $45.
Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Gail Wines does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn is in Boyes Hot Springs and MacArthur Place in the town of Sonoma, each about 15 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 15 minutes away. Mountain wines from historic Moon Mountain Vineyard; in 2020 the Index-Tribune named Erich Bradley, who grows Gail's Chenin Blanc, as its winemaker. The Moon Mountain Vineyard experience is $125, about 90 minutes, with a vineyard tour, the natural rock caves and a seated tasting. By request only; the winery confirms the time.
About 20 minutes away. French country cooking on the Sonoma Plaza; we confirm hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 5 minutes away. Side-by-side tastings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet from different regions, just off the Sonoma Plaza. The seated Comparative Tasting is $45, about 60 minutes. Daily by appointment.
About 10 minutes away. The Bundschu family's Rhinefarm estate, farmed since 1858, with a hillside wine cave. The seated Rhinefarm Tasting of estate wines is $45; we plan about an hour. Open daily; reservations encouraged on weekends.
Back by about 3:50 p.m., about six hours after pickup.
Repris confirms visits by request, so the morning time may shift once it replies. For a lighter day, Pangloss Cellars on the Plaza pours a Repris Flight ($70) in place of the mountain visit.
About $215 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
