About the Winery

David Hejl learned wine as a waiter, sommelier and chef, and a stint in Paris turned it into a calling. He made his first vintage of Domaine Della in 2010 in a homemade cellar, then left private equity to run Kosta Browne as chief executive and general manager, leading it to its sale in 2015 before turning to Domaine Della full time. The winery is named for his mother, Della, who raised eleven children in a two-bedroom home in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Domaine Della makes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in very small quantities from vineyards in the Russian River Valley, the Sonoma Coast and the Santa Lucia Highlands. The top bottling, 4 Amours, is a selection of four standout barrels from the vintage's most expressive Sonoma Coast lots. Recent vintages have been rated 93 to 99 points by leading critics, and the wines appear on critic James Molesworth's lists of recommended California Pinot Noirs. New releases go to list members three times a year.

Visits are for list members and their guests, by appointment. The 80-minute experience starts with a tour of the winery and continues with a seated tasting of the current release, led by a member of the winemaking team. One fee covers a party of 1 to 8, which makes it a good choice for a small group of Pinot Noir lovers.
