David Jeffrey worked in corporate treasury for Seagram in New York before changing careers in 2001, at 44, to study viticulture and enology at Fresno State. He worked the 2003 harvest in St-Émilion with Dr. Alain Raynaud at Château Quinault l'Enclos, then he and his wife, Marla, found a bare hilltop in Chalk Hill and began planting it in 2005. Calluna is the botanical name for heather, chosen in memory of a family friend named Heather.
The estate has 17 acres of vineyard, with the five classic red Bordeaux varieties planted in separate blocks matched to clay-loam soils over fractured shale and sandstone. The hilltop gets the sun to ripen Cabernet Sauvignon while elevation and Pacific breezes keep it from extremes. David Jeffrey is still the winemaker.
Visits are by appointment and are usually held at the family's vineyard home, high above Windsor, with views across the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, Alexander Valley and Mount St. Helena. The range runs from the Calluna Vineyards Cuvée and Estate Cabernet Sauvignon to the Aux Raynauds Merlot, Malbec and an Estate Blanc.
$50 per person for a tasting visit, waived with purchase.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
