Cosa Obra is the winery of owner and proprietor Gregory Hayes, who makes the wines with consulting winemaker Kent Humphrey. The name joins two Spanish words: cosa, a thing, and obra, a hand-crafted body of work. In the winery's own words, this is our thing, this is what we do.
Since 2008 Cosa Obra has bought from small, carefully chosen Sonoma County vineyards: Atoosa's, Greywacke and Windsor Oaks in the Russian River Valley, Dry Stack in Bennett Valley, Fallenleaf in Sonoma Valley, Hummingbird Hill on the Sonoma Coast, Ray Teldeschi in Dry Creek Valley and Sangiacomo in Carneros. It makes Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, rosé of Pinot Noir and a proprietary red blend, with current releases of Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Sonoma County rosé.
The winery is not open to the public. Tours and tastings are by appointment only at its working winery on Hopper Avenue in north Santa Rosa, which makes it an easy, personal first stop of the day.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Vinarosa, set among 92 acres of vineyards in Santa Rosa, is about 5 minutes from Cosa Obra, and Hotel E, a restored 1906 Beaux-Arts landmark on the square in downtown Santa Rosa, about 10. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
A tour and tasting by appointment, about an hour; the fee is confirmed when we book.
About 40 minutes away. The former Arista estate on Westside Road, bought in 2025 by Chris and Piper Underwood, where a 19th-century hops farmer rests among the vines under an old California bay laurel. The Estate Expressions Tasting of four estate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from several vintages, with views to Mount St. Helena, is a $30 deposit and runs 60 to 90 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in summer, Wednesday to Sunday from November to April; reservations encouraged, leashed dogs welcome.
About 20 minutes away. James Beard finalists Mark and Terri Stark's tapas bar on Center Street, steps from the Healdsburg plaza, with paella, Spanish wines and tables indoors or outside. Open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 5 minutes away. Matt and Sara Licklider's winery, conceived in 2005 in the alley behind Spago Beverly Hills, buying from small family vineyards across California. The tasting room on the corner of the Healdsburg plaza feels like a European wine bar, with records spinning on a vintage Marantz turntable. Tastings are $40 to $60; the Elevated Tasting Experience of library and large-format wines in the private lounge is $60, or $75 with bites. Open daily noon to 7 p.m.; reservations strongly encouraged.
Back in Santa Rosa by 3:50 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The long middle leg takes you from Santa Rosa out Westside Road. From November to April Harper's Rest hosts Wednesday to Sunday, so in those months this day works Wednesday to Sunday.
About $70 to $90 per person at Harper's Rest and LIOCO, paid directly to each winery; the Cosa Obra tasting fee is to be verified upon reservation.
