Russian River Valley · Sonoma County
The former Arista estate on Westside Road, given new life in 2025 with regenerative organic Pinot Noir and Chardonnay tasted in verticals, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

In the 1850s a hops farmer named Reuben Harper worked this land on Westside Road, and he rests among the vines under a centuries-old California bay laurel, which gives the winery its name. Chris Underwood, CEO of Young's Holdings and fifth generation of a family in the wine and spirits business since 1888, bought the 15-acre Moon Dust Vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills in 2021 and this property in 2025; until then it was the estate of Arista Winery. He and his wife, Piper, run it with winemaker and general manager Vance Rose, who has more than 40 years in wine.
Harper's Rest farms two estate vineyards with regenerative organic methods, both planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: Harper's Rest Vineyard, a few hundred yards west of the Russian River in the Middle Reach, planted in 2006 with 14 clones of Pinot Noir and Montrachet-clone Chardonnay, and Moon Dust, first planted in 1996 in the cool Sebastopol Hills on Goldridge soil. In the cellar nothing is added beyond what the grapes bring, no commercial yeasts or enzymes, and the wines rest 14 months in French oak on their lees. Matt Stornetta manages the vineyards.
The visit is built around verticals. The Estate Expressions Tasting pours four estate wines, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from several vintages, so you can taste how each season shaped them, with vineyards, mountains and Mount St. Helena in view. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor tasting areas. It makes an easy first stop on Westside Road, and we time the pickup so you are there soon after the doors open at 10.
$30 deposit per person for the Estate Expressions Tasting of four wines, for 1 to 6 guests, 60 to 90 minutes. $40 deposit per person for the Large Party Experience, for 7 to 12 guests, 90 to 120 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
