About the Winery

Chasing Ether is the label of winemaker Jon Berlin, who grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. He worked harvests at Flowers on the Sonoma Coast, Hamilton Russell in South Africa and Joseph Phelps in Napa Valley, earned a postgraduate diploma in viticulture and winemaking at Lincoln University in New Zealand, and was winemaker at Viader before nearly two decades as winemaker and general manager of El Molino Winery in Napa Valley, from 2005 to 2024.

In 2024 he started Chasing Ether in Sonoma. The wines are blended from vineyards across California, meant to tell the story of the state as a whole. Releases include a Cinsault, a California white, a rosé and a Pinot Noir, with a fall 2026 release of a white and a Cinsault. The New York Times featured Chasing Ether in an October 2026 piece on good California wine at $20 to $30.

There is no tasting room. Chasing Ether sells online and ships to select states. The day below stays around Sonoma, where the winery is based, with three Carneros estates that host.

The day below runs about $192 per person in tasting fees at Stone Edge Farm, Roche and Gloria Ferrer.
