Bartholomew Estate Winery

About the Winery

This is the land where Count Agoston Haraszthy launched California's premium wine industry in 1857, building the state's first wine caves, a stone winery and his villa. Frank and Antonia Bartholomew bought the run-down ranch in 1943, discovered its history and replanted the vineyards. In 1990 the estate passed to the nonprofit Bartholomew Foundation, which runs it as a 375-acre private park open to the public.

The foundation's co-trustee Anna Pope and winemaker Kevin Holt opened Bartholomew Estate Winery in April 2019 in a renovated mission-style building from 1922. The estate vineyards are sustainably farmed, and the Viviano Syrah block sits on the site of the first privately owned vineyard in Sonoma Valley, planted in 1832. All profits from the winery go to caring for the park.

Guests love the setting. From April to October, tastings move outdoors to the Oak Knoll, with views over the vineyards and hills, and the rest of the year they are held in the art gallery or the courtyard patio. Longer visits walk the vineyards and step inside the Haraszthy Villa, ride the estate on horseback or hike to a view of San Francisco Bay.

Tasting Fees

$45 to $55 for the seated Wine Tasting Flight, 1 hour 15 minutes. $85 for Wine Tasting + Grazing Board, Wednesday to Sunday with 48 hours' notice. $95 each for the Antonia Bartholomew Legacy Vineyard Tour & Tasting and the Vine to Bottle Behind the Scenes tour, about 2 hours. $150 for Forest Immersion and Estate Wine Tasting. Horseback rides with a bottle of wine are $160 to $180, booked through Sonoma Valley Trail Rides.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

MacArthur Place, a hotel and spa set in six acres of gardens in Sonoma, and The Lodge at Sonoma, an Autograph Collection resort in town, are each about 25 minutes from The Donum Estate in Carneros, where the day starts, because Bartholomew Estate opens at 11 a.m. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:25 · The Donum Estate

About 25 minutes away. Single-vineyard Carneros Pinot Noir and Chardonnay among nearly 70 monumental sculptures by artists such as Ai Weiwei and Louise Bourgeois. The Tasting Lounge is $80, and the Carneros Experience, a guided walk through the gardens and art with wine, $100, each about an hour. By reservation only, best booked 6 to 8 weeks ahead; 21 and over.

About $210 to $240 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
