Richard Arrowood is one of the best-known winemakers in Sonoma County history. He started at Korbel in 1965, was winemaker at Chateau St. Jean from 1974 to 1990, and founded Arrowood Vineyards & Winery in 1986, where he stayed on as winemaker through several changes of ownership until 2010, when he left to give his full attention to Amapola Creek, the estate he and his wife, Alis, founded in 2005.
Amapola Creek covers about 100 acres on the western slope of the Mayacamas Mountains, next to the Monte Rosso Vineyard, on red iron-oxide soils that have grown grapes for more than a century. The vineyard blocks run from about 1,000 feet in Montaña Vista down to 400 feet in China Bowl, named for the Chinese laborers who built a 19th-century stone wall that still stands near the winery, and a stagecoach road once crossed the property. Arrowood made old-world-style, Bordeaux-style Cabernet here, along with Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and a Rhône-style red, from about 20 acres of organic vines.
In December 2019 the Arrowoods sold the vineyards, winery and inventory to their neighbor, Brion Wise of B. Wise Vineyards, who continues to make Cabernet under the Amapola Creek label, with Richard Arrowood consulting, and is replanting 25 acres organically with Phil Coturri. Amapola Creek has no public tasting room or visiting program of its own; the wines and any visit requests go through B. Wise, whose estate cave next door hosts private tastings by appointment.
Amapola Creek does not offer public tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn, a historic resort with its own geothermal mineral waters, is about 10 minutes from B. Wise, the first stop, and Gaige House, a Japanese-inspired inn along Calabazas Creek in Glen Ellen, about 15. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
Since Amapola Creek does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, starting next door. About 15 minutes away. Brion and Ronda Wise's estate on Moon Mountain, next to the historic Monte Rosso Vineyard, where private tastings are held in a network of fermenting and aging caves furnished with vintage pieces and Wild West bronzes, with a terrace over the Sonoma Valley. By appointment only; the fee is to be verified upon reservation.
About 20 minutes away. The Coturri family's winery in a 120-year-old farmhouse a block from the Sonoma Plaza, where guests sit in antique theater seats and pick records for the turntable; every wine comes from certified organic vineyards that Phil Coturri farms. The seated Moon Mountain District Wine Tasting is 90 minutes ($75). Tastings are reserved in advance; open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
About 5 minutes away. Sondra Bernstein's restaurant on the Sonoma Plaza, serving French country cooking from a seasonal menu, with cheese and charcuterie, a Rhône-focused wine list and a garden patio. Open from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 25 minutes away. John and Nancy Lasseter's organic estate in Glen Ellen, on a property founded by a French winemaker in 1894; John directed Toy Story. The Patio Tasting of five estate wines looks out over the vineyards ($60), and the Estate Vineyard Tour by club cart through century-old Heritage Block Zinfandel, with cheese and charcuterie, is $95. Reservations required.
Back in Glen Ellen or Sonoma by 4:00 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. B. Wise hosts by appointment and Lasseter takes reservations only, so we confirm both times when we book.
About $135 per person for Winery Sixteen 600 and the Lasseter Patio Tasting, paid directly to each winery; the B. Wise tasting fee is to be verified upon reservation.
