About the Winery

The Yates family has farmed this corner of Mount Veeder since 1949, on land the winery says has been farmed continuously since the late 1800s. Michael Yates spent summers in the vineyards with his father, Alden, and grandfather, Perry, earned an agriculture degree at Chico State in 1977, replanted the vines he first planted in high school and founded the winery in 1999.

The 35 acres climb in steep hillside terraces above 1,200 feet in the Mount Veeder AVA, replanted in the early 1980s to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc on volcanic soils. Michael makes the wine with his daughters: Whitney coordinates winemaking and the vineyard, and Mary runs the business. The wines include Fleur de Veeder Merlot, the Cheval Cabernet Franc and the Alden Perry Reserve blend, and the family also sells grapes to other wineries.

There is no tasting room or posted hours. Visits are arranged privately with the family by phone or email, which means a quiet, personal look at a working mountain vineyard most people only drive past on Redwood Road. We make the request on your behalf and confirm the time and any fee.

Tasting Fees
