About the Winery

Stephanie Trotter Zacharia grew up in Philadelphia, number 15 of the 16 children of soft pretzel baker Tom Trotter and his wife Peg, which is where the 1/16 comes from. She left for Alaska in 1985, ran out of money in Northern California, and after marrying in 1994 moved to Calistoga, working her way from the tasting room to cellar master and apprentice winemaker. In 2011, encouraged by her mentor, she started her own label.

She seeks out small, dry-farmed, hand-tended vineyards and ages the wines 28 to 33 months in French or American oak. The 2023 releases are a Flying J's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coombsville AVA, a Newman Vineyard Cabernet Franc from Knights Valley and Ben's Blend, a Bordeaux-style red, about 40 cases each. She was named Best Woman Winemaker of the Year at the 2026 International Women's Wine Competition.

Trotter 1/16 has no tasting room, and the wines are not sold in stores. They are sold online and through the free Liquid Art Club, which ships once a year in the fall. Club members can arrange a private tasting with Stephanie at a Northern California restaurant or a dinner in their own home. There is no winery to visit, so we plan the day at estates nearby that do host.

Tasting Fees

Trotter 1/16 does not offer tastings.

9:50 · Pickup at Indian Springs or Four Seasons Napa Valley

Since Trotter 1/16 does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. We pick up at 9:50 for Rivers-Marie's 10 a.m. tasting: Indian Springs is a few minutes away, and Four Seasons Napa Valley about 8. The day runs about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Rivers-Marie

A few minutes away. Thomas Rivers Brown and Genevieve Marie Welsh's own winery on Foothill Boulevard, with a glass-enclosed tasting room looking across nursery fields to the Palisades, pouring small-lot Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet. A seated tasting takes about 60 to 90 minutes; the fee is confirmed when the winery accepts the reservation. Tastings at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.

11:50 · The Debate

About 18 minutes away. A downtown St. Helena salon where single-vineyard Cabernet Francs and Cabernet Sauvignons from famous sites are poured side by side for comparison. The Collection Tasting is $75, about 90 minutes. By appointment, privately hosted.

1:30 · Lunch at Brasswood Bar + Kitchen

About 8 minutes away. Lunch at Brasswood Bar + Kitchen on Highway 29 north of St. Helena, with a patio and seasonal menus, open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:45 · Olabisi Wines

About 12 minutes away. Ted and Kim Osborne's small, unorthodox label, poured on Washington Street in downtown Calistoga; Ted was once associate winemaker at Storybook Mountain. The Private Winemaker-Guided Tasting is $75, by appointment when the winemaker is available; we allow about an hour. Open daily from 11 a.m.

3:45 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:00 p.m., about six hours after pickup.

About $150 per person in tasting fees for The Debate and Olabisi, plus Rivers-Marie's fee, which is confirmed when the winery accepts the reservation. Fees are paid directly to each winery.

Rivers-Marie pours at set times and confirms reservations within one to two business days, so we book it first.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
