About the Winery

Toymaker Cellars was founded in 2011 to make what it calls a fun and playful interpretation of a serious Napa Valley Grand Cru Cabernet Sauvignon. The playful part is the label: every vintage features a different childhood toy, custom printed by an artisanal process, from transportation-themed toys to the 1930s toy Grand Prix race car on the 2019.

The serious part is the wine. Winemaker Martha McClellan, whose résumé includes Sloan Estate, Checkerboard Vineyards and Harlan Estate, works with a single high-elevation hillside vineyard in the Diamond Mountain District. Production is about 250 cases of Cabernet a year, aged 28 months in new French oak and then 18 months in bottle. Lisa Perrotti-Brown of The Wine Independent gave the 2019 99 points.

Toymaker sells its wine only to its mailing list, which also offers library vintages. It has no tasting room and publishes no visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below stays at the north end of the valley, starting on Diamond Mountain itself, with private, seated tastings at mountain and family estates around Calistoga and St. Helena.

Tasting Fees

Toymaker Cellars does not offer tastings.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Four Seasons Napa Valley or Indian Springs.

10:00 · Pickup at Four Seasons Napa Valley or Indian Springs

Since Toymaker Cellars does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, starting on Diamond Mountain, where Toymaker's grapes grow. Four Seasons Napa Valley and Indian Springs are both in Calistoga, about 10 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · The Vineyardist

About 10 minutes away. A historic 1879 Diamond Mountain estate with a 100-point Cabernet, poured at a private, seated tasting in the estate salon. The Signature Tasting with a seasonal cheese plate is $195, 60 to 75 minutes. By reservation only; we arrange it on your behalf.

11:45 · Museion Winery

About 10 minutes away. A family winery in a former Calistoga water plant, with wines named for the Greek Muses and a custom crush cellar for small producers. The Amuse Me tasting is $65; we allow about an hour. By prepaid reservation for 1 to 6 guests.

1:00 · Lunch at The Charter Oak

About 15 minutes away. Lunch at The Charter Oak in St. Helena, a sit-down restaurant cooking over an open hearth, open daily from 11:30 a.m. (brunch from 11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:20 · Haynes Vineyard

About 8 minutes away. A tour of Joe Heitz's original Home Ranch, then a seated tasting of wines from what the winery calls the oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines left in Napa Valley, planted in Coombsville in 1967. $150 per person plus tax, 90 to 120 minutes. By reservation, daily 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

4:15 · Back to your hotel

Back in Calistoga by about 4:35 p.m., about six and a half hours after pickup.

About $410 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

The Vineyardist and Museion confirm their times when we book. The day runs about six and a half hours; extra time is billed by the hour. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
