About the Winery

Haynes Vineyard in Coombsville was first planted in 1967 and grows Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Noir. The winery says these are the oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines in Napa Valley. In 2019 the vineyard was bought by Gaylon Lawrence Jr., owner of Heitz Cellar, from the Haynes family, with plans to make small-batch wines from it.

Winemaker Matt Taylor describes the job as stewardship, using oak only to frame the wine. The range runs from Corazón de la Caldera Chardonnay, from the oldest vines, and Forgeron Chardonnay to Pinot Noir and a Northern Rhône style Syrah, grouped under Vigneron, Forgeron and Corazón.

Tastings are not at the vineyard but at The Home Ranch in eastern St. Helena, the 157-acre original home and winery of Joe Heitz, reached by winding up Taplin Road under old oaks. The visit includes a tour of the property, its winemaking facilities, biodynamic farm and the 1898 Stone Cellar before a seated tasting.

Tasting Fees

$150 per person plus tax for Haynes Vineyard: A History of Coombsville, a tour and seated tasting at The Home Ranch, 90 to 120 minutes.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
