Jack Tognetti bought a prune and pear orchard on Bayview Avenue in Carneros in 1964 and planted Chardonnay there in 1980, at a time when few people grew grapes on the Napa side of Carneros. He named it Aloise Francisco Vineyard after his wife's middle name and his own. For years the grapes went into Swanson's Chardonnay, and since 1998 the family has worked directly with Schramsberg, which makes a Tognetti Vineyard Blanc de Blancs every few years. Jack died in early 2022 at 104 and passed the vineyard to his four children.
His son Robert and grandsons Michael and Matthew began making home wine from the vines in 2010 with Keith Hock, then of Schramsberg, and released their first vintage in 2012 from a Wente-clone block in the middle of the vineyard. The 20 acres are all Chardonnay, in Wente, Monticello, 131 and Clone 4, on clay loam near Carneros Creek, with leaf-pulling and hedging done by hand. The family made Cabernet Sauvignon in 2014 and 2015 from a small St. Helena vineyard, and since its first vintage in 2015 sparkling wine has become its focus. Robert's wife Wendy runs marketing and sales.
There is no tasting room. The family hosts seasonal gatherings at the ranch, such as sparkling wine tastings and vineyard walks, announced to its mailing list, and sells through its Friends of the Ranch club. The day below stays in Carneros at three estates that host every day.
Tognetti Family Winery does not offer regular tastings.
On the day below, Bouchaine's Garden Tasting is $45, Cuvaison's Estate Tasting is $60 and Domaine Carneros's daily tasting is from $45.
Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
