Linda Neal bought this Oakville property in November 1987 and has owned it ever since. The land has a long farming past: the Denatale family grew grapes here from 1923, the Liebigs farmed hay from about 1950, and later owners planted vines on the flat. Neal saw the remains of the old Denatale vineyard on the hill and replanted it, terracing the slope by 1989.
The 4.5-acre vineyard is named for its rich red soil, and its neighbors include Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle's Maya and Joseph Phelps's Bacchus. The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate, made by Benoit Touquette, who also makes his own Fait-Main and Teeter-Totter labels. Neal has worked with Ruben Rubio's vineyard management team for 16 years.
Tierra Roja is sold through its online shop and mailing list and poured at a handful of restaurants; the 2022 vintage was released on October 1, 2025. The winery publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do.
Tierra Roja does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Tierra Roja does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. North Block Hotel and Bardessono are both in Yountville, about 15 minutes from the first stop on Zinfandel Lane. The day fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 15 minutes away. A family winery on Zinfandel Lane where rustic breads come out of a wood-fired oven at your table. The Wood-Fired Rustic Bread and Charcuterie Pairing is $100, three wines with an individual charcuterie platter; we allow about 75 minutes. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., booked a week ahead.
About 8 minutes away. A small, French-owned winery pouring single-vineyard wines in a tasting house and garden on Dowdell Lane. A private Wine Tasting of six wines is $75; we allow about an hour. Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. by reservation; 21 and over, no children.
About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29 just north of Yountville, a Napa Valley favorite for more than 40 years, open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 20 minutes away. Aaron Pott's small Cabernet vineyard near the Knights Valley line, with whites aged in Tuscan amphorae, poured at the Latour Court tasting room in south Napa. The Perliss Estate Tasting is $80 to $110 depending on the flight; we allow about an hour. By reservation for parties of 1 to 8.
Back by about 3:55 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
About $255 to $285 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Oakham hosts Monday to Friday and needs a week's notice for the bread pairing, so this is a weekday plan. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.
