About the Winery
Dennis and Judy Groth bought a 121-acre stretch of Oakville valley floor in 1981, when Dennis was CFO of Atari, and added a parcel in what is now the Oak Knoll District in 1982. Nils Venge made their first vintage, the 1982, and the family moved onto the Oakville vineyard in 1985. Their daughter Suzanne Groth has led the winery since 2017.
Groth's 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was the first Napa Valley wine to earn 100 points. The family still farms the Oakville Estate and the Hillview vineyard, and makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Ted Henry, only the fourth winemaker in more than four decades, joined in 2021.
It is a calm, garden-like stop in the middle of Oakville. We like to arrive a few minutes early so guests can stroll the insectary garden before sitting down. Tastings range from a 45-minute flight to a library tasting, and in season there is a cellar tour and a weekend ATV ride through the estate vineyards with a glass in hand. The Family Table welcomes children with their own snack and grape juice.

$50 for A Taste of Groth, about 45 minutes, and $50 per adult for the Family Table (children free). $75 for Oakville Roots, 60 minutes. $85 for the seasonal Crafting a Legacy cellar tour and tasting. $100 for Cabernet for the Ages, a 90-minute library tasting. $125 for the Among the Vines ATV tour, 90 minutes, seasonal weekends at 10 a.m.

About 12 minutes away. A family-owned Stags Leap District estate with its own wine caves. Taste of Napa Valley, at a private table with cheese and charcuterie, is $85 for 75 minutes; the private Cave Tour tasting is $125 for 90 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by reservation; no minors or pets.
