About the Winery

Jeff Cova and Noah McMahon, who met through fundraising in 2001, started The Setting with winemaker Jesse Katz and released their first wine in 2015. Katz became the youngest head winemaker in the United States at 26. The name comes from the winery's motto: the most significant thing about wine is the setting.

Two vineyards anchor the wines: SJ Ranch, an old-vine Cabernet site on Chalk Hill Road in Alexander Valley, and Glass Slipper Vineyard in Coombsville. The first wine, the 2015 SJ Ranch Cabernet, tied the highest Wine Spectator score for an Alexander Valley Cabernet since 1982, and a 2019 Glass Slipper bottle sold for $1 million at auction. The wines, made in Healdsburg, have raised millions for causes including the Navy SEAL Foundation.

There is no public tasting room. Instead, The Setting hosts curated private tastings by request in a handful of places: The Setting Barn and the Napa Valley Car Club in Napa, Meadowood in St. Helena and the Appellation Hotel in Healdsburg. We send the request with your dates; the winery replies within a day and confirms the venue, time and fee.
