About the Winery

Symmachia takes its name from the Greek word for alliance, which the winery describes as a bond between land and the people who make the wine. The wines are made by Philippe Melka and the team at Atelier Melka. The winery does not publish its owners' names.

Both current wines are Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain, the steep district on the west side of Napa Valley above St. Helena. The 2021 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is described as dark and powerful, with dark cherry and a hint of mountain herbs. The 2021 Family Reserve comes from a one-acre vineyard on Spring Mountain, tended by hand, that yields only about two tons of grapes.

The wines are sold online through symmachiawines.com, and a mailing list announces new releases. The listed address on the Silverado Trail in Calistoga is a production facility, and there is no tasting room, so Symmachia does not receive visitors. The day below goes up Spring Mountain to three family estates that do host.

Tasting Fees

Symmachia does not offer tastings. The three Spring Mountain wineries on the day below run about $195 per person: $50 at Pride Mountain, $50 at Keenan and $95 at Spring Mountain Vineyard.

Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a St. Helena hotel such as Wydown Hotel or Hotel St. Helena.

10:00 · Pickup at Wydown Hotel or Hotel St. Helena

Since Symmachia does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, all on Spring Mountain, where Symmachia's grapes are grown. Wydown Hotel and Hotel St. Helena are both on Main Street in St. Helena, about 25 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:25 · Pride Mountain Vineyards

About 25 minutes away. A family estate at the crest of Spring Mountain, where the Napa and Sonoma county line runs through the vineyard. The Estate Experience is $50, about 90 minutes. Open Wednesday through Monday by appointment; closed Tuesdays.

12:05 · Keenan Winery

About 10 minutes away. A family estate built around a 1904 stone winery high on Spring Mountain. The estate tasting of current release and reserve wines is $50, about 75 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., by appointment.

1:40 · Lunch at Market

About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Market, an American restaurant on Main Street in St. Helena; we confirm hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:00 · Spring Mountain Vineyard

About 10 minutes away. A historic 845-acre mountain estate above St. Helena, home of the 1884 Miravalle mansion. The Vista experience is $95, about 90 minutes. Open daily by reservation, with tastings from 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

4:30 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:40 p.m., about six and three-quarter hours after pickup.

About $195 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Pride Mountain is closed Tuesdays, so plan this day for any other day. Spring Mountain roads are narrow and winding, so we keep to three wineries; for a shorter day, skip Keenan and have lunch after Pride.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
