About the Winery

Jim and Carolyn Pride bought the historic Summit Ranch at the top of the Mayacamas Mountains in December 1989 as a retirement venture. Jim taught himself viticulture from UC Davis textbooks, and the couple welcomed their first guests in 1998. After Jim died in 2004, their children Steve and Suzanne carried the winery forward, and the family still owns it today.

The ranch has a long past. Edward Hirschler planted grapes here in 1885 and built a stone winery in 1890, and its ruins can still be seen. The Napa and Sonoma county line runs down the middle of the property, which sits in the Spring Mountain District. A 23,000-square-foot cave was dug in 1999, and about 85 acres of vines are farmed with a permanent cover crop.

Pride is known for big, mountain-grown reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a Reserve Cabernet first made in 1994. Every visit is hosted, for up to six guests, and runs about 90 minutes; the Estate Experience tastes current releases on a walk through the caves, and the Reserve and Summit add seated tastings. The drive up Spring Mountain Road is winding, and the winery strongly discourages Uber and Lyft, so a private driver makes the day simple.

Tasting Fees

$50 for the Estate Experience, $75 for the Reserve Experience and $95 for the Summit Experience, each about 90 minutes. The Summit Experience is limited to eight appointments a week.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 9:30 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Harvest Inn or Alila Napa Valley.

9:30 · Pickup at Harvest Inn or Alila Napa Valley

Pride's first appointment of the day is at 10 a.m., and the winding drive up Spring Mountain Road takes about 20 to 25 minutes, so the day starts at 9:30. Harvest Inn, a garden resort beside the vineyards at the south end of St. Helena, and Alila Napa Valley, a Hyatt resort in St. Helena, are both at the foot of the mountain. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Pride Mountain Vineyards

The Estate Experience, about 90 minutes ($50). The Reserve Experience ($75) runs the same length and keeps the day on schedule.

11:55 · Louis M. Martini

About 25 minutes away, back down the mountain. A St. Helena landmark built in 1933 and restored in 2019 by architect Howard Backen, with views into the barrel cellar from the tasting room. The Taste of Martini flight is $55 (a cheese board is $15 more). Reservations recommended and prepaid; open Thursday through Monday.

1:05 · Lunch at Mustards Grill

About 12 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29 just north of Yountville, a Napa Valley favorite for more than 40 years, open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:15 · Frog's Leap

About 10 minutes away. A family winery in Rutherford whose Garden Tasting is poured beside the frog pond behind its historic Red Barn winery. The Garden Tasting is $50, for guests 21 and over. By appointment, Thursday through Monday from 10:30 a.m.

3:15 · Back to your hotel

Back by 3:30 p.m., six hours after pickup.

Optional: Alpha Omega

Adds about an hour and a half. A Rutherford winery known for its estate fountains and terrace views of the Mayacamas Mountains. Walk-ins are welcome when space allows for flights of $75 to $125, about 90 minutes; open daily, last seating at 4:30 p.m.

About $155 to $180 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Pride Mountain is closed on Tuesdays, and Louis M. Martini and the Frog's Leap Garden Tasting run Thursday through Monday, so this day works best Thursday through Monday. On a Wednesday we swap in other wineries.
